Ingredients:
- 1 tablespoon olive oil (15 ml)
- 1 medium onion, chopped (approximately 1 cup or 150g)
- 2 cloves garlic, minced
- 1 (28 ounce) can crushed tomatoes (794g)
- 1 (15 ounce) can tomato sauce (425g)
- 1 teaspoon dried oregano
- 1/2 teaspoon dried basil
- 1/4 teaspoon red pepper flakes (optional)
- 1 teaspoon sugar
- Salt and black pepper to taste
- 1 (16 ounce) can refrigerated biscuit dough or 1 sheet (14.1 oz) frozen puff pastry, thawed (454g biscuit / 400g puff pastry)
- 1 pound Italian sausage, cooked and crumbled (454g)
- 1 cup sliced pepperoni (approx. 100g)
- 2 cups shredded mozzarella cheese (approx. 200g)
- 1/2 cup grated Parmesan cheese (approx. 50g)
- Optional toppings: sliced mushrooms, bell peppers, black olives
Instructions:
- Sauté onion and garlic in olive oil. Add crushed tomatoes, tomato sauce, oregano, basil, red pepper flakes (if using), sugar, salt, and pepper. Simmer for 15 minutes, stirring occasionally.
- Preheat oven to 375°F (190°C).
- If using biscuits: Flatten each biscuit slightly and arrange them to cover the bottom of the baking dish, overlapping slightly to form a crust. If using puff pastry: Gently roll out the pastry to fit the baking dish and place it in the dish.
- Spread a thin layer of sauce over the biscuit/pastry base. Layer with half of the sausage, pepperoni, mozzarella cheese, and Parmesan cheese. Repeat layers.
- Bake for 35-40 minutes, or until the crust is golden brown and the cheese is melted and bubbly.
- Let stand for 5-10 minutes before cutting and serving pizza casserole.
