Ingredients:
- 6 medium apples (such as Granny Smith, Honeycrisp, or Braeburn), peeled, cored, and sliced
- 2 tablespoons lemon juice
- ¼ cup granulated sugar
- 2 tablespoons all-purpose flour
- 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon
- ¼ teaspoon ground nutmeg
- 1 cup all-purpose flour
- ½ cup packed light brown sugar
- ½ cup rolled oats
- ½ teaspoon ground cinnamon
- ½ cup (1 stick) unsalted butter, cold and cut into cubes
- 1 1/2 cups all-purpose flour
- 1/2 cup (1 stick) unsalted butter, cold and cut into cubes
- 1/4 cup granulated sugar
- 1/4 teaspoon salt
- 4-6 tablespoons ice water
Instructions:
- Prepare the Apple Filling: In a large bowl, toss the apple slices with lemon juice, sugar, flour, cinnamon, and nutmeg. Set aside.
- Make the Crust: In a bowl, combine flour, butter, sugar and salt. Cut the butter into the flour using a pastry blender or your fingers until the mixture resembles coarse crumbs. Gradually add the ice water, one tablespoon at a time, until the dough just comes together. Flatten the dough into a disk, wrap in plastic wrap, and chill for at least 30 minutes.
- Prepare the Streusel Topping: In a medium bowl, combine flour, brown sugar, oats, and cinnamon. Cut in the cold butter with a pastry blender or your fingers until the mixture resembles coarse crumbs. Chill while preparing the base.
- Assemble and Bake: Roll out the crust and place the crust in a square 9 inch baking pan. Spread the apple filling evenly over the crust. Sprinkle the streusel topping evenly over the apples. Bake in a preheated oven at 375°F (190°C) for 45-50 minutes, or until the topping is golden brown and the apples are tender. If the topping browns too quickly, loosely tent with foil.
- Cool and Serve: Let the apple streusel slice cool completely in the pan before cutting into squares and serving. This helps the filling set.
